Clinical outcomes and complication profile of total hip arthroplasty after lumbar spine fusion: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

Results of the study suggest that prior spinal fusion results in significantly higher rates of revision, dislocation and complications compared to patients without prior spinal fusion following total hip arthroplasty. However, this meta-analysis included studies which lacked randomization and were retrospective in nature. Furthermore, the validity of included registry data is uncertain, and adjustment for number of fused levels and level of fusion was not performed.

Ten studies on patients with or without prior spinal fusion undergoing total hip arthroplasty were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Included studies were designed as case-control, retrospective or registry data studies. Outcomes of interest included pooled dislocation rate, revision rate and complication rate. Results of the study revealed all pooled outcomes to be significantly in favour of the no spinal fusion group compared to the spinal fusion group.
