Combined Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Anterolateral Ligament Reconstruction Results in Superior Rotational Stability Compared with Isolated Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in High Grade Pivoting Sport Patients: A Prospective Randomized Clinical Trial

J Knee Surg. 2023 Jan;36(1):54-61.
Contributing Authors

S Mogos R D'Ambrosi D Antonescu IC Stoica

Sixty patients with unilateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears were randomized to receive an isolated ACL reconstruction (n=28) or an ACL reconstruction combined with an anterolateral ligament (ALL) reconstruction (n=32). The outcomes of interest included the Pivot shift test, Rolimeter differential laxity, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) objective and subjective scores, and the rate of complications. Outcomes were assessed up to 12 months post-operation. Combined ACL+ALL reconstruction resulted in superior rotational laxity, as measured by the pivot shift test, throughout the 12 month period. IKDC objective scores at 6 and 12 months, and subjective scores at 12 months were also in favour of the combined ACL+ALL group.
