Combination of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2023;11(1):7 BMJ Open. 2022 Nov 16;12(11):e061008What this means for my practice?
The results of this study suggest that a combination therapy of mesenchymal stem cells and platelet-rich plasma provides superior pain relief in the 6-12 month period and functional improvement in the first 6 months, with no significant difference in adverse events. This study was limited by the small number of studies, short follow up time, and lack of imaging outcomes.
Study Summary
Six controlled clinical trials containing a total of 493 patients with knee osteoarthritis were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the combination of mesenchymal stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (n=204) with control (n=289; mesenchymal stem cells, platelet-rich plasma, or hyaluronic acid alone). Pooled outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcomes Scores (KOOS), and adverse events. The results found that combination therapy provided superior pain relief at 6-12 months, and greater WOMAC scores at 3-6 months vs. control, with no difference in the risk of adverse events.
