The findings indicate a lack of similarity on the cognitive effects of isolation versus LSD. Eight hours of isolation did not produce significant group effects of cognitive impairment. There were some similarities in effects of loss of sense of time, concentration difficulties and imagery, but LSD still produced more profound and intense experiences. These findings are limited by the similarities in the isolation versus placebo conditions, and the use of actors instead of a random healthy sample.

Forty-two unemployed actors underwent a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to compare the effects of LSD and isolation on cognition. A cognitive battery consisting of multiple tests was used to assess cognition. LSD produced significant impairment on cognitive tests while isolation did not produce any impairments compared to LSD and placebo. There were stark differences in the effects of LSD versus isolation.
