2013 COA Annual Meeting: Randomised Clinical Trial of At-Arthroscopy Viscosupplementation (Hylan G-F 20) for Post-operative Pain and Function: A Pilot Study

30 male patients, who underwent knee arthroscopy for partial medial meniscectomy, were randomized to receive either a viscosupplementation injection (hylan G-F 20) or a placebo injection after surgery. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of an at-arthroscopy viscosupplementation injection on pain and functional outcomes and determine the feasibility of a larger scale trial. At 1 week following surgery, there were no significant differences between the groups for any of the outcomes. However, at 6 and 12 weeks at-arthroscopy, hylan G-F 20 injections successfully improved pain and function, compared to the placebo. In addition, there were no adverse events.
