COA 2023: Long-Acting Anesthetic for Managing Post-Operative Pain After Carpal Tunnel Release .
Does the addition of longer-acting local anesthetic improve post-operative pain after carpal tunnel release? A randomized controlled trial
139 patients undergoing carpal tunnel release were randomized to receive either lidocaine alone (L; n=67) or long-acting mixture with lidocaine and bupivacaine (LB; n=72). Outcomes of interest included pain measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) within the first 72 hours and the timing and quantity of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Tylenol/Advil) after surgery. Pain scores were significantly lower in the LB group at 6 and 8 hours. Additionally, the time to first postoperative analgesic use was longer in the LB group.
