2022 COA Annual Meeting : Primary sarcomas of the spine: a systematic review and pooled data

Eleven studies including 150 spinal sarcoma patients were included in this meta-analysis assessing the effect of surgical resection types and adjuvant therapies on patient survival. The outcomes of interest included overall mortality/survival and local recurrence. Significantly greater overall survival was observed with en-bloc resection vs. piecemeal resection for spine chondrosarcomas and Ewing sarcomas. In Ewing's sarcoma, the addition of chemotherapy and radiation therapy provided significantly better survival vs. piecemeal resection, regardless of the success of the enbloc resection. Across all 3 tumour types, the risk of local recurrence was significantly lower with en-bloc resection.
