Conventional drainage versus four hour clamping drainage after total knee arthroplasty in severe osteoarthritis: A prospective, randomised trial
Int Orthop. 2009 Oct;33(5):1275-8. Epub 2008 Oct 17.60 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty for severe knee osteoarthritis were randomized to either receive a traditional closed suction drainage or a 4 hour clamped drainage. The study aimed to find the best drainage method. This results, comparing haemostasis between these two groups, suggested that the clamped drainage group needed fewer units of blood for transfusion and reduced total blood loss.
