Randomized Comparison Between the Cemented Scientific Hip Prosthesis and Omnifit: 2-Year DEXA and Minimum 10-Year Clinical Follow-Up

72 osteoarthritic patients (75 total hip arthroplasties) undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to evaluate the outcomes for treatment using Scientific Hip Prosthesis compared against the Omnifit prosthesis. Patients were monitored over a 10 year period and were evaluated for bone remodeling (using DEXA scans), radiological outcomes, Harris Hip Scores and Oxford Hip Scores. The results obtained in this randomized control trial indicated that the Scientific Hip Prosthesis performs better for BMD-curve slopes (bone remodeling), Harris Hip Scores, and Rand -36 outcomes, and even demonstrated a trend towards improved patient satisfaction evaluated via the Oxford Hip Score. No revisions were required in either group but 1 patient in each group experienced radiographic loosening.
