Cast Immobilization Vs Surgical Treatment for Distal Radius Fractures: A Meta-Analysis .
Efficacy of cast immobilization versus surgical treatment for distal radius fractures in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Osteoporos Int . 2023 Apr;34(4):659-669.Eleven randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis to compare the efficacy of cast immobilization for distal radial fractures against surgical treatment. Outcomes of interest were Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score, grip strength, EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D), Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE), range of motion, Short-Form-12 physical and mental component scores, and complication rates. DASH scores were significantly better in the cast group compared to the surgical treatment group. Alternatively, PRWE scores at final follow-up and complication rates favored the surgical group. All other outcomes were similar between both of the groups.
