The effect of buffered lidocaine in local anesthesia: a prospective, randomized, double-blind study

Epub 2013 Apr 625 patients (50 hands) undergoing bilateral simultaneous carpal tunnel decompression were randomized to receive local anesthetic injection of lidocaine with a buffered solution of sodium bicarbonate in one hand and mixed with saline in the other. Results, measuring the effects of buffering on visual analog scales pain scores, demonstrated that the buffered hand reported lower pain scores than the control. No adverse events were noted in the procedure.
