Bikini Incision Increases the Incidence of Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve Injury in Direct Anterior Approach Hip Arthroplasty: A Prospective Ultrasonic, Electrophysiological, and Clinical Study
J Arthroplasty . 2021 Oct;36(10):3463-3470.Two hundred patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty via the direct anterior approach (DAA) were randomized to receive a bikini incision (n=100) or longitudinal incision (n=100). The primary outcome of was the incidence of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) injury. Secondary outcomes of interest were electrophysiological examinations of the LFCN postoperatively. The bikini incision group had a significantly higher proportion of LFCN injuries compared to the longitudinal incision group. Both groups demonstrated reduced sensory conduction velocity and sensory action potential amplitude on the surgical side compared to the non surgical side but no differences between the two groups were found.
