Barbed Versus Traditional Sutures: Closure Time, Cost, and Wound Related Outcomes in Total Joint Arthroplasty

Epub 2013 Nov 22.34 patients scheduled for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomly allocated to receive barbed or traditional sutures, with the purpose of comparing time to wound closure, cost, and rate of wound complications between suture types. Barbed sutures decreased time to wound closure and improved cost-savings, but appeared to increase the frequency and severity of wound related complications compared to traditional sutures.
