Balance Training Versus Balance Training With STARS in Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability: A Randomized Controlled Trial

J Sport Rehabil. 2017 Sep;26(5):347-357. doi: 10.1123/jsr.2016-0018
Contributing Authors

CJ Burcal AY Trier EA Wikstrom

24 patients with chronic ankle instability were randomized to a 4-week program of balance training with and without the addition of Sensory-Targeted Ankle Rehabilitation Strategies (STARS). Outcomes included the Foot and Ankle Measure (FAAM and FAAM-sport subscale), the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), and center-of-pressure time-to-boundary minima data in the anterior-posterior and medial-lateral directions with eyes open and eyes closed curing single-limb stance on a force plate. Between-group effect size point estimates generally favoured the BT with STARS group, though 90% confidence intervals crossed zero for all outcomes, suggesting no difference between groups.
