A randomized controlled trial was conducted where 17 volunteers with social anxiety disorder were randomized to receive either 2 mL/kg ayahuasca or placebo. A public speaking test was performed and assessed using the Self-statement During Public Speaking Scale (SDPSS), and additional outcome measures included the visual analog mood scale, Bodily Symptoms Scale (BSS), Recognition of Emotions in Factial Expressions (REFE), as well as vitals and biochemical analysis. The effects of anxiety and REFE were assessed again at 7, 14 and 21 days following the treatment session. When compared to placebo, ayahuasca significantly improved the self-perception of speech performance and lead to an increase in somatic symptoms as assessed by the BSS.
