Association between Bioengineered Hyaluronic Acid and Healthcare Costs following Knee Arthroplasty

A total of 122,750 patients who underwent a knee arthroplasty were included in this retrospective study of claims data comparing patients who received bio-fermentation derived hyaluronic acid injection prior to knee arthroplasty (n=4,091) and those that did not receive any hyaluronic acid injection prior to knee arthroplasty (n=118,659). Overall healthcare costs, readmission rates, and revision rates were assessed 6 months following knee arthroplasty, as well as healthcare costs in the 6 months prior to and including knee arthroplasty. Results revealed significantly lower healthcare costs following knee arthroplasty, lower readmission rates, and lower inpatient costs per readmitted patient in the hyaluronic acid group compared to the control group. No significant differences between groups were observed in the revision rate nor the healthcare costs in the 6 months leading up to and including knee arthroplasty.
