Effect of Antibiotic Prophylaxis on Infection Rates in Pediatric Supracondylar Humerus Fractures Treated with Closed Reduction and Percutaneous Pinning: A Prospective Double-Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial.
J Am Acad Orthop Surg . 2024 May 1;32(9):410-416.165 patients with displaced supracondylar humerus fractures were randomized to receive either antibiotic prophylaxis (n=84) or placebo (n=81). The primary outcome of interest was the presence of infection. Secondary outcomes included pin-site erythema, drainage, septic arthritis, and osteomyelitis. Outcomes were assessed at the time of pin removal, which occurred between 3 to 6 weeks postoperatively. Overall, the results of the study revealed no significant difference in infection rates between the antibiotic group and the placebo group. The study concluded that antibiotic prophylaxis did not reduce the infection risk in pediatric patients undergoing this procedure.
