The results of this randomized trial revealed no significant differences between an adjustable-length and fixed-length loop device for femoral side fixation with respect to knee stability, function, and quadriceps wasting at 2 years post-operation. The small sample size, subjective measurement of knee stability (no arthrometer used) and lack of long term follow up were limitations of the trial. Future randomized studies with a larger sample size and longer follow up are of interest.

Forty-seven patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears with or without meniscal injury were randomized to receive an arthroscopic ACL reconstruction with femoral side graft fixation using an adjustable-length loop device (n=24) or a fixed-length loop device (n=23). The outcomes of interest included knee function on the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Lysholm scoring systems, knee stability via the Lachman and pivot shift tests, and quadriceps wasting measured by thigh circumference. Outcomes were assessed at 2 years post-operation. No significant differences in all outcomes were observed between the two groups.
