Action Observation and Motor Imagery administered the day before surgery enhance functional recovery in patients after total hip arthroplasty: A randomized controlled trial

Eighty patients with hip osteoarthritis, undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either action observational training with motor imagery (n=40) or standard care (n=40). The primary outcome of this trial is the timed up-and-go (TUG) test which measures functional mobility. Secondary outcomes such as maximum walking speed, pain, and fear of movement were also assessed using the following tools: 10-meter walk test (10MWT), Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), and Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), respectively. Significant differences were apparent at 4 days post-surgery in TUG scores in the experimental group. Overall, TUG and 10-min walk test scores decreased from baseline to 4 days post-operatively. NPRS and TSK scores improved after 4 days.
