2018 AAOS Annual Meeting: Fighting the Opioid Epidemic: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Double-Blinded Trial Comparing Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, and Oxycodone after Hand Surgery

30 patients scheduled for either carpal tunnel release or trigger finger release were randomized to postoperative analgesia with either oxycodone 5mg, ibuprofen 600mg, or acetaminophen 500mg. Patients were assessed for pain scores, the number of analgesic pills consumed, the incidence of adverse events, and rate of request for additional analgesia over the first 5 days postoperatively. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups for any of the assessed outcome measures. Further enrollment in the trial is needed to strengthen the findings from the analyses conducted in the study to date.
