Psoas Compartment Block Versus Periarticular Local Anesthetic Infiltration for Pain Management for Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Prospective, Randomized Study
100 patients scheduled for total hip arthroplasty were randomized to postoperative analgesia with either a psoas compartment block or periarticular infiltration analgesia. Patients were assessed for pain scores and narcotic consumption into the evening of the first postoperative day (POD1). The only statistically significant difference between groups observed was higher pain in the psoas compartment block group at 3 hours after surgery; otherwise, pain at rest, pain during mobilization, and narcotic consumption at POD1 AM and POD1 PM did not significantly differ between groups.
