2018 AAOS Annual Meeting: Prospective, Double Blind Randomized Controlled Trial on the Use of Immediate Postoperative Electrical Muscle Stimulation to Preserve Muscle Function and Volume Following Achilles Tendon Surgery

OE Journal. 2018;6(6):740 patients scheduled for Achilles tendon repair were randomized postoperatively to either neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or sham NMES. Patients were followed up over 12 weeks for patient-reported function, cross-sectional calf muscle volume on MRI, and calf circumference. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups between any of the assessed outcomes.
