Prospective, Double Blind Randomized Controlled Trial on the Use of Immediate Postoperative Electrical Muscle Stimulation to Preserve Muscle Function and Volume Following Achilles Tendon Surgery
40 patients scheduled for Achilles tendon repair were randomized postoperatively to either neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or sham NMES. Patients were followed up over 12 weeks for patient-reported function, cross-sectional calf muscle volume on MRI, and calf circumference. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups between any of the assessed outcomes.
