Operative vs. Nonoperative Treatment of Acute Displaced Distal Clavicle Fractures: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial
57 patients with a displaced fracture of the distal third of the clavicle were randomized to operative treatment with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), or nonoperative treatment with sling immobilization. Patients were assessed primarily for outcome on the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score at 1 year follow-up, with secondary outcomes included the Constant score and complications. The results demonstrated that, despite significantly lower rates of nonuion and malunion among patients who were treated with ORIF, DASH scores and Constant scores did not significantly differ between groups within the first year after treatment.
