Comparison of Screws to Plate-and-Screw Constructs for Midfoot Arthrodesis
50 patients scheduled for arthrodesis of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd tarsometatarsal joint were randomized to surgery completed with either a plate-screw construct or a single, trans-articular screw. Patients were assessed for outcomes over a mean 42- to 46-month follow-up, including pain, function, bone healing, and wound complications. Results for pain and function were reported to not significantly differ between groups. Bone healing by 6 months after surgery occurred in 92% of the plate-screw construct group and 84% of the trans-articular screw group.
