2014 AAOS Annual Meeting: Osteosynthesis or Arthroplasty for the Treatment of Geriatric Distal Humerus Fractures: A Meta-analysis

OE Journal. 2014;2(6):1025 studies were included in this review investigating total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in the treatment of distal humeral fractures. Of the 25 studies included, 24 were deemed to be weak through quality assessment. The results indicated that functional outcome and range of motion appear to be similar following surgery using either TEA or ORIF. Non-progressive radiolucency was observed in 9.8% of TEA cases, and radiographic implant loosening in 4.4% of TEA cases. The two treatments did not substantially differ in complication rate following surgery.
