2014 AAOS Annual Meeting: A Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Hyaluronic Acid for Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment to Placebo

OE Journal. 2014;2(6):45200 patients suffering from mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis were randomly allocated to receive 3 hyaluronic acid (HA) injections or 3 placebo injections to determine the ability of HA to improve knee pain and function. A Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), knee range of motion, treatment satisfaction, and adverse events were used to determine clinical and functional outcomes. Upon analysis, it was found that none of the outcome measures differed significantly between groups.
