2016 AAOS Annual Meeting: Five-Year Clinical Performance of Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene and Vitamin E Diffused Polyethylene using RSA

65 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to undergo the procedure using a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner that was either diffused or not diffused with vitamin E. The study was conducted in order to determine if penetration levels of the femoral head into the polyethylene liner differed between groups, patient-reported outcomes were also assessed. Although results indicated significantly higher penetration with liners not diffused with vitamin E, values did not achieve clinical significance. Both groups reported improvements in other outcomes.
