The Quality of Hand and Elbow Related Randomized Controlled Trials: A Critical Analysis of Current Literature
63 RCTs completing research on hand or elbow orthopaedic topics were analyzed to determine if current randomized control trials, regarding hand and elbow treatment, are performed in a manner that allow for high quality evidence reporting. The results of the review indicated that although there has been an improvement in RCTs over the last decade, a large number of studies are still found to be “poor” based on the Modified Coleman Methodology Score and Jadad scale. Common methodological deficiencies in these studies were: A lack of power analysis, lack of withdrawal and drop out description, and failure to use validated outcome assessments.
