Dr. Hanne Albert discusses antibiotic treatment in patients with chronic low back pain and vertebral bone edema (Modic type 1 changes).

162 patients (144 of whom completed the 1-year follow-up) suffering from chronic low back pain and Modic type 1 changes (bone edema in vertebrae) were randomized to either receive one of two dosing regimens of antibiotic or placebo tablets 3 times a day, for 100 days. Results indicated that there was a significant improvement in pain, disability and all other secondary outcomes reported in the antibiotic group compared to the placebo group at a 1 year follow-up. Because of insufficient power for this part of the study, no dose-effect relationship was observed.
