Measurement of joint effusion and haematoma formation by ultrasound in assessing the effectiveness of drains after total knee replacement: A prospective randomized study

OE Journal. 2013;1(2):50 J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2010 Jan;92(1):51-5.91 patients with primary osteoarthritis of the knee, scheduled for a cemented total knee replacement (TKR), were randomized to be treated with or without a closed suction drain. At 6 weeks after surgery, it was found that the placement of a drain after the TKR surgery led to a lower incidence of hematoma formation; however, there was no difference in the joint effusion, and moreover similar clinical outcomes were recorded with and without the drain.
