Efficacy of Anterior Quadratus Lumborum Block and Pain After Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

110 patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a quadratus lumborum block (QLB; n=54) or a femoral nerve block (FNB; n=56). The primary outcome of interest was morphine consumption after 24 hours. Secondary outcomes included pain at rest, in passive and active motion on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), operative time, blood loss, time to ambulation, and the incidence of quadriceps weakness and adverse events. There were no significant differences between the groups for all outcomes except for pain during active motion which was significantly but not clinically lower in the FNB group over the 24 hours.
