The effect of in-bed turning and mobilization training given to patients who undergo lumbar disk surgery on postoperative first mobility level: A single-blind, randomized controlled trial.

48 patients undergoing a lumbar disc herniation procedure were randomized to receive pre-operative in-bed turning and mobilization training via a role-playing technique (n=24) or standard care (n=24). The outcomes of interest included willingness to mobilize, mobility (assessed with patient and observer mobility scales), and anxiety (measured with trait and state anxiety scales). Outcomes were assessed on the first post-operative day. Patients who received the training program reported significantly better mobilization (assessed by patient and observer) and turning (assessed by observer), lower anxiety (state anxiety scale), and a greater willingness to mobilize compared to the control group.
