Dual-Mobility versus Large Femoral Heads in Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty: Interim Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

146 patients undergoing a revision total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive a dual mobility implant (n=76) or a large femoral head (≥36mm; n=70). The primary outcome of interest was the incidence of prosthetic dislocation. Additional outcomes of interest included the incidence of mortality, revision, and 90-day readmission, as well as the time to revision surgery. The rates of dislocation in both groups were similar. No differences between groups were observed in the rate of revision or 90-day readmission either; 1 patient in the large femoral head group died from unknown causes. Whilst further follow-up and recruitment is required, the results of this interim analysis suggest comparable dislocation risk with the two implant methods.
