Comparison between radial and focused types of extracorporeal shock-wave therapy in plantar calcaneal spur: A randomized sham-controlled trial.

Ninety-nine patients with plantar calcaneal spurs were randomized to receive either radial extracorporeal shock-wave therapy (EWST; n=33), focused EWST (n=33), or sham (n=33). Outcomes of interest were pain, disability, and activity limitation, all measured using the foot function index (FFI). Adverse events were also assessed at 1, 5, and 13 weeks post-intervention. Change in baseline scores were significantly better in the focused and radial EWST groups for all outcomes when compared to the sham group at all time points except for FFI pain, disability, and activity restriction at one week between focused vs sham groups where no difference between the groups was apparent.
