A meta-analysis of 35 randomized controlled trials and 8,078 patients comparing intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA, n=4,295) to a placebo normal saline injection (n=3,783) was performed. The primary outcome of interest was the incidence of adverse events following injection. There was no significant difference in the overall rate of adverse events, the rate of serious adverse events or the rate of adverse event related study withdrawals between the two groups. The HA group demonstrated significant higher rates of local adverse events.
