24 Hansen's disease patients, with irreversible common peroneal nerve paralysis of >1 year duration after undergoing tendon transfer surgery, were randomized to receive early active mobilization at 5 days or standard immobilization for 4 weeks. At the mean 16 month follow up, it was observed that the early active motion was a safe and feasible method,that did not increase tendon pullout and yielded similar functional outcomes, compared to immobilization. It also provided earlier recovery towards independent walking, after tendon transfer for foot-drop deformity.
