The Rise of the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern: Uncertainties Remain, But Readiness Is All .

OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - OE Original

OE Journal. 2021;9(23):2
The emergence of the Omicron variant quickly shifted global attention as scientists noted more than 50 mutations—many on the spike protein—raising concerns about faster spread and possible immune escape. Early reports showed rapid international detection, prompting WHO and EU/EEA officials to label the overall risk as high to very high, even as major uncertainties remained. Researchers are still working to understand how transmissible Omicron truly is and how well current vaccines protect against infection, severe illness, and reinfection. While evidence continues to evolve, public health agencies emphasize readiness: strengthening surveillance, accelerating vaccination, maintaining proven protective measures, and ensuring clear communication so systems can respond quickly if Omicron behaves more aggressively than expected.
