Lateral Augmentation with Suture Tape Versus Modified Brostrom-Gould Procedure for Chronic Ankle Instability: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials .

As the pursuit for optimal surgical management of chronic ankle instability continues, suture tape augmentation has emerged as a modern alternative to the modified Broström-Gould (MBG) procedure. RCT evidence was synthesized comparing lateral ligament augmentation using suture tape with the MBG procedure for chronic ankle instability. Five studies assessed pain, FAOS scores, recurrence of instability, and wound infection. Across all efficacy and safety outcomes, suture tape augmentation showed no significant advantages or disadvantages compared with MBG. Evidence quality was very low due to high heterogeneity, risk of bias, and imprecision, limiting confidence in the findings. More robust, adequately powered RCTs are needed to clarify whether suture tape augmentation offers any true clinical benefit over MBG.
