OE Journal. 2023;11(6):2This OE Insight critically explores the promise and pitfalls of AI in medicine. While AI excels in image analysis and language processing, many models are overhyped—trained on small, biased datasets with poor reporting. Simpler models often perform just as well. Key issues include data leakage and lack of generalizability. Yet, advances in LLMs, FDA-approved imaging tools, and prompt engineering signal transformative potential. AI won’t replace doctors—but may become their most powerful assist.
