Arthroscopic Partial Meniscectomy versus Physical Therapy: Which one is more effective for Degenerative Meniscal Tears ?

Degenerative meniscus tears, common among older adults, are often managed with arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) or exercise therapy. While APM remains widely performed, recent evidence raises questions about its long-term effectiveness. Meta-analysis revealed no significant differences in knee pain or function at 1 year and beyond, with short-term improvements in pain favouring exercise. Some evidence also favoured exercise for muscle strength. However, heterogeneity in outcomes, inconsistent follow-up periods, and high risk of bias limit certainty. These findings support exercise therapy as a viable non-surgical option for degenerative meniscus tears, though standardized future trials are needed.
