Application of Synthetic Cartilage Implant for Hallux Rigidus: A Systematic Review .

Evidence from randomized and non-randomized studies were reviewed to assess synthetic cartilage implants (PVA hydrogel/Cartiva) as a joint-sparing alternative to arthrodesis for advanced hallux rigidus. One RCT and several related analyses, along with four comparative NRSIs, formed the available evidence base. The RCT used a non-inferiority design, and most non-randomized comparisons evaluated SCI against arthrodesis, with others examining cheilectomy-based procedures. Findings were insufficient to determine clear efficacy, and current data do not justify a recommendation for or against SCI use. More high-quality trials are needed to clarify benefits, harms, and clinical value.
