Introducing New Devices to Orthopaedics: A “Stepwise” and Multidimensional Approach for Success

The rapid pace of innovation in orthopaedic surgery brings exciting possibilities—but also potential risks. From modular implants to micro-robotics, new devices frequently enter the market with great enthusiasm, only to face questions about efficacy and safety once in broader use. In this Insight, we explore how emerging innovations in orthopaedics can be introduced more safely and sustainably. Central to the discussion is the IDEAL Framework, a stepwise, evidence-based approach designed to guide the ethical and effective integration of new surgical technologies. This Insight also examines the pitfalls of the “hype cycle,” outlines examples where early enthusiasm outpaced clinical proof, and emphasizes the multidimensional impact of innovation—from patient outcomes to regulatory and training demands.
