More Pain, More Gain? Exercise for Osteoarthritis

This OE Insight explores the complex relationship between physical activity and osteoarthritis (OA). While elite athletes face increased OA risk, moderate exercise appears protective and therapeutic. Data from OE MIND and recent RCTs support exercise—especially neuromuscular, aerobic, and aquatic modalities—for reducing pain, improving function, and enhancing joint health. Clinicians should emphasize the “hurt ≠ harm” principle and guide patients toward sustainable, enjoyable activity routines.
