Unilateral Biportal Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy May Have Advantages Vs. Open Procedures .
Unilateral biportal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (UBE) may offer advantages over traditional open procedures for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. This minimally invasive technique uses two small portals—one for visualization and one for instrumentation—allowing targeted decompression with reduced soft tissue disruption. Clinical findings suggest that UBE may be associated with less postoperative pain, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery compared with open surgery, while achieving comparable decompression outcomes. By preserving surrounding musculature and minimizing surgical trauma, UBE aligns with the broader shift toward minimally invasive spine surgery. These results highlight its potential as an effective alternative to open discectomy in appropriately selected patients.
