MRI Study Finds Higher Rates of ACL Tears in Men Vs Women .
A large MRI-based analysis reported that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears were observed more frequently in men than in women among patients presenting with knee pain, challenging the conventional belief—largely based on sports injury data—that women have higher ACL injury rates. The study, which evaluated over 13,500 routine knee MRIs, found that men had more isolated ACL tears as well as ACL tears with associated meniscal injury across age groups, especially in younger adults, while women were more likely to show meniscal and medial collateral ligament tears in older age groups. These findings suggest differences in injury patterns between sexes that may be driven by varied mechanisms of injury and underline the value of tailored imaging interpretation and clinical evaluation when assessing knee injuries in men and women.
