Intensive Lifestyle Medicine Program Reduces Infection, Pain After TJA .
A recent report highlights that participation in an intensive, preoperative lifestyle medicine program was associated with lower rates of postoperative infection and reduced pain following total hip or knee arthroplasty in high-risk patients. The program, delivered over several weeks before surgery, focuses on modifying lifestyle-related risk factors such as diet, physical activity, weight, chronic disease management and other health behaviors. Patients who completed the intervention experienced fewer surgical site infections and reported less pain 90 days after surgery compared with typical outcomes, suggesting that addressing overall health and lifestyle before TJA may improve recovery and reduce complications. These findings support broader use of lifestyle-focused optimization as a nonpharmacologic strategy to improve TJA outcomes and may help decrease healthcare costs associated with postoperative complications.
