GLP-1 Use Prior to Hemiarthroplasty May Not Increase Medical, Surgical Complications .
Preoperative use of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists does not appear to increase medical or surgical complication risk following hemiarthroplasty, according to recent findings. Given the growing use of GLP-1 therapies for diabetes and weight management, concerns have emerged regarding potential perioperative risks, including delayed gastric emptying and metabolic effects. However, available evidence suggests that patients receiving GLP-1 medications did not experience higher rates of postoperative complications compared with those not using these therapies. These findings provide reassurance for clinicians managing patients undergoing hemiarthroplasty, supporting the continued evaluation of GLP-1 therapy within perioperative optimization strategies as use of these agents continues to expand.
