Augmented reality (AR) platforms are transforming surgical practice by providing surgeons with real-time, three-dimensional visualization of patient anatomy directly within their operative field. This enhanced spatial awareness supports more accurate implant placement, safer navigation, and broader use of minimally invasive techniques. Medivis’ recent FDA 510(k) clearance for its Spine Navigation system illustrates the maturation of this technology. The platform integrates AR with artificial intelligence (AI) to create “holographic navigation,” enabling surgeons to visualize anatomical structures that are otherwise hidden, thereby improving precision, efficiency, and workflow integration during spine procedures.
According to Medivis President Christopher Morley, AR represents a shift toward advanced computing in the operating room, allowing clinicians to “see the invisible.” Despite its demonstrated clinical utility and regulatory approval, AR adoption remains limited. Morley identifies insufficient market awareness as the primary barrier, noting that many surgeons still perceive AR as futuristic rather than a proven, outcome-enhancing tool.
