The effect of a single infusion of zoledronic acid on early implant migration in total hip arthroplasty. A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial

50 patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head, scheduled for total hip arthroplasty (THA), were randomized to receive a post-operative injection of zoledronic acid or saline. This trial assessed the effect of zoledronic acid on early implant migration, which was associated with aspect loosening in THA. After a 2 year follow-up, radiographic results indicated a reduction in acetabular component migration and a trend towards decreased stem subsidence in patients receiving zoledronic acid treatment.
